HARBOR SPRINGS — Summer comes up quicker than you'd expect, so Harbor Springs Public Schools is prepping for its next round of construction this summer.

During the school board meeting on Monday, the board approved bids for an electrical contractor, abatement contractors and for new school furniture.

This summer, a majority of the construction will be focused at the middle and high schools. The projects include roofing work and the addition of secure vestibules at both schools.

Additionally, schools will be getting new flooring, paint and general classroom upgrades. The board approved the purchase of new classroom furniture during Monday's meeting.

The upgrades and construction are all part of the second phase of the district's $41.85 million bond proposal. The first phase included the construction of the new Shay Elementary School, as well as HVAC work at Blackbird Elementary School.

"It feels really good to see the stuff that we have done so far," said Superintendent Brad Plackemeier. "Seeing Shay Elementary done after two years of construction on that — it's nice to have that part done."

"It'll feel a lot better once the summer is over, but it's good," he said about the construction work.
